Beginner's Guide to News

Newsgroups are very similar to a bulletin board using e-mail. The first time you use newsgroups it will download a list of the newsgroups that you may join in. Currently we have over 16,000 different newsgroups to take part in. Newsgroups have names like alt.fishing, rec.games, or comp.win95. Each newsgroup has a particular subject that the people in the newsgroup will be talking about. In some newsgroups people even post games, pictures, and other files. I recommend caution while using newsgroups however because some of the content is questionable. When you choose a particular newsgroup your client will download the message headers for that newsgroup. Then when you click on one of these headers it will download the actual message. Like e-mail you can reply to the person who sent the message. You can have your reply appear in the newsgroup, sent to the person’s e-mail, or both. You can also post your own messages to the group. It works just like e-mail accept that you don’t have to know an e-mail address, you just post it to the group. After you post, the message will appear after the next newsfeed, usually the next day. Then people can reply to your message. Newsgroups are a good way to find answers to questions you have. There are newsgroups about many things including cellular phones, software, games, parenting, and almost everything else you can think of. If you have a specific interest you can try to find a newsgroup for it.
